For my birthday recently, some friends gave me the book,
What Really Matters, by Tony Schwartz. It was published
thirteen years ago but is still quite relevant today. The
book details the author’s quest to find what he calls “wisdom in America.” He discovers lots of very different
approaches by people – mainly doctors, researchers and
people of science – who are searching for the key recipe to living truly contented lives.
One chapter that I found particularly intriguing was about
the necessity of balance between exertion of energy and a
rest period. Essentially a lot of research has been done
where the results say that it’s good to expend focused energy toward a project, in this case it was the physical
activity of tennis, but then you must follow it with the
necessary amount of recovery time. When you give yourself
the time and energy to focus on your activity, or be in the ‘flow,’ then allow for recovery, you create a wave pattern
of activity and rest that benefits your body and mind
enormously.
I began thinking about how we enjoy summer here in
Wimberley. It seems to me that we innately understand this
concept of activity balanced with leisure. People are out
walking, hiking, biking and swimming, then later I will
see, sometimes, the same people enjoying local events such
as one of our plays.
Certainly one of the best things about summer, or any time, in Wimberley is the EmilyAnn’s presentation of Shakespeare Under the Stars (July 28–August 9). This season they feature The Comedy of Errors and King Lear. One of the reasons why Wimberley is a bit of heaven is because of our wonderful live performances by the EmilyAnn Theatre and the Wimberley Players. Located in their still-new home on Old Kyle Road, the
Wimberley Players present the delightful Rose’s Dilemma, July 25–August 10. Talent abounds in these locals plays and
with so many to choose from it’s time to catch your wave,
and enjoy!
